A 16 × 20 ft deck with 34 board rows, 16 joist lines, and two face screws at each crossing needs 1,088 base screws. Add 10% contingency and the estimate becomes 1,197 screws, or 12 packs of 100.
The actual count depends on board rows, joist spacing, board direction, face-fastening pattern, butt seams, and the fastener package size. A blanket screws-per-square-foot estimate cannot account for all of those inputs.
The basic deck screw formula
base screws = board rows × joist lines × screws per crossingThe standard example on this page uses two face screws at each board-to-joist crossing. That is consistent with certain manufacturer instructions: TimberTech's TOPLoc instructions specify two fasteners per joist on each deck board. It is not a universal rule for every product or fastening system.
Count the board rows first
For a 16 × 20 ft deck with boards running along the 20 ft dimension, the 16 ft side is the cover width. With 5.5 in boards and a 1/4 in gap, the layout produces 34 rows.

Count joist lines, including the ends
With 16 in on-center spacing across a 20 ft board run, the simplified planning calculation is:
ceil((20 ft × 12 in per ft) ÷ 16 in) + 1 = 16 joist linesThe additional line accounts for the opposite supported end. This is a material-planning model, not a structural framing design. Your actual framing layout can include perimeter details, blocking, double joists, picture-frame borders, or additional support.
Worked example: 16 × 20 ft deck
From crossings to boxes you can buy
34 rows × 16 joist lines = 544 board-to-joist crossings.
At two face screws per crossing: 544 × 2 = 1,088 base screws.
A 10% contingency adds 109 screws: 1,088 + 109 = 1,197 estimated screws.
For 100-count packs: ceil(1,197 ÷ 100) = 12 packs. You buy 1,200 screws and have three spare after pack rounding.
Notice the difference between a precise calculation and a purchase quantity: nobody can buy 11.97 packs. Round up to whole packages after calculating the expected fastener count.
How joist spacing changes the screw count
Holding the example deck, board direction, board rows, two-screw pattern, and 10% contingency constant gives the following planning comparison:

Important: This table illustrates quantity sensitivity, not which joist spacing is structurally allowed. Maximum joist spacing depends on the actual decking product, installation pattern, framing design, manufacturer instructions, and local code. Do not choose a wider spacing simply to reduce the screw count.
How butt seams affect face screws
When two board ends meet at a butt seam, both board ends need the support and fastening specified by the manufacturer. Our planning tool lets you enter the total number of butt seams and adds one extra fastening set per seam. With two screws per crossing, 20 seams add 40 screws before contingency.
For that example, the base count increases from 1,088 to 1,128. A 10% allowance adds 113, for 1,241 estimated screws, or 13 packs of 100.

Do hidden deck fasteners use the same formula?
No. Hidden clips, grooved-board systems, starter clips, finish clips, plugs, and manufacturer-specific butt-joint clips have different coverage rules. A face-screw count cannot reliably predict how many clips a particular hidden-fastener system requires.

What else can increase the order?
Border boards, stairs, fascia, replacement screws, rejected or damaged fasteners, extra blocking, and nonstandard board widths can all change the purchase total. Structural connectors and framing hardware are separate from face screws and should not be inferred from this estimate.
