How many deck screws do you need?

Estimate face-fastener quantity and whole packs from your deck dimensions, board layout and joist spacing. You control the screws per board-to-joist crossing, butt seams and contingency.

How the estimate works

Count the fastening points, then round up to whole packs.

The calculator first counts installed deck-board rows from actual board width and gap. It then counts joist lines along the board run. Multiplying those values gives board-to-joist crossings.

Your selected screws per crossing are applied to those crossings. If you enter butt seams, the calculator adds one extra fastening set per seam, then adds your contingency and rounds the result up to whole packs.

What changes the count

Three inputs matter most.

Board width

Narrower boards create more installed rows and more board-to-joist crossings.

Joist spacing

Closer joist spacing creates more support lines and therefore more fastening points.

Screws per crossing

The fastening pattern directly multiplies the count. Match the pattern required for your decking and fastener system.

Common questions

Deck fastener calculator FAQ

Does this calculate hidden fasteners?

No. Hidden-fastener clip counts, starter clips, finish clips and edge-fastening rules differ by product system. This page estimates face-fastener quantities only.

Why can I change screws per crossing?

Fastening requirements vary by decking, fastener type and installation instructions. The calculator uses two as a planning default, but you can match the pattern you actually intend to use.

What should I enter for butt seams?

Enter the total number of board-to-board butt joints in the installed decking if you know it. The calculator adds one extra fastening set for each seam because two board ends meet there.

What does fastener contingency mean?

It is simply the extra percentage you choose as a purchasing buffer for loss, damage or field adjustments.
